yoga eases anxiety & depression, increases quality of lifeGetting started with yoga—or thinking about it? Good for you! A few yoga tips for beginners will help you get off to a better start. Take a look at these tips and then I’ll let you know what I think of them.

Yoga Tips for Beginners: 10 Tips to Consider

1. Find a class suitable for your fitness level
If you have not done much exercise for a while it may be best to find a slower paced more gentle class. If you are physically active you can probably get away with jumping in to a more advanced class.

2. Wear suitable clothing
Make sure you have clothing that does not restrict movements in any way. It is also essential to find something somewhat fashionable even for beginners yoga ;)

3. Tell Your Teacher If You Have Injuries
Be very careful if you have lower back injuries as overexertion can aggravate back pain despite yoga having a great name for curing back pain.

Also be careful with knee injuries and shoulder injuries as a lot of yoga poses can aggravate them.

4. Find An Experienced Teacher
Highly experienced teachers are good at motivation and injury prevention. You will have a better experience if you see a teacher that has been teaching yoga for years.

These yoga tips for beginners in general are good, however I disagree with some of the descriptions.

Tip 1: Yoga is not the same as other exercise, so start with a beginners class, not advanced, regardless of your activity level.

Tip 2: Don’t worry about being fashionable! Yoga is not about looking stylish—but about feeling great.

However, you definitely should skip anything that seems dangerous (which you shouldn’t find in a beginners class) and should take it slow. And as with all exercise programs, you should consult your doctor before starting something new. He or she will let you know what to take extra care with, and any experienced yoga teacher will value and honor this information to help you get started with yoga. Enjoy the journey!
