Yoga Relief for Migraine Headaches

Is yoga relief for migraine headaches effective? I was so pleased to read that a medical doctor named yoga as his favorite alternative therapy for migraine relief!  “My own personal favorite for patients is yoga, because it is so widely available and affordable,” said Dr. Paul B. Rizzoli, director of the John R. Graham Headache Center at Faulkner Hospital, Boston, Mass., as quoted in the Chicago Tribune.

Dr. Rizzoli also suggests the supplements melatonin, coenzyme Q10, and magnesium. Magnesium is a personal favorite of mine. I use the product Natural Calm (magnesium citrate) every evening shortly before bedtime for a restful night’s sleep. It’s also very helpful for relieving muscle tension, so it makes sense that it would relieve migraine headaches.

    I really value medical doctors who understand the value of care other than drugs. I’m more inclined to listen to them than those who “poo-poo” any care other than drugs. Thanks for sharing this great info.

      The ones who turn down alternative therapy reflexively – you know they’re poorly informed. It’s great to know that some doctors are realizing the value of yoga for relief of migraines and more.

    Great post. So very important to remember to get a good understanding of what is causing the migraine before attempting to ‘relieve’ the pain. The word migraine is currently a catch all word for any severe headache. There are so many root causes of headaches. The most critical issue is understanding the root cause and resolving that first – then using healthy, non-pharmaceutical approaches to long term healing – of which yoga provides a great option for many.

      Good points Donna – even with alternative therapies, we don’t want to simply relieve symptoms, but to discern the cause. Yoga is so great for relieving both physical and emotional tension that can be the root of many symptoms.

  4. I hate migraines.. This is great that there are yoga poses to help it. They often last more than a day so if you can eliminate them like this great!

    I agree yoga is helpful for migraine relief. It has worked for me in the past. Yoga has great calming effects and it relieves stress as well.
